JASON BUCKNER:
"If you're getting lots of views, YouTube wants to take those views and run ads. Is that right?"
CORINNA ESSA:
"That's right, that's right. So, you know when you watch a video on YouTube, there will be an ad that plays. Well, the person who owns the video is getting paid for that advertising space. So that's how it works."
JASON BUCKNER: And do you have to be anyone special to get those ads on your YouTube videos? How does that work?
CORINNA ESSA:
"Well, in order to be eligible, you have to meet a certain criteria. I don't remember because I was eligible almost ten years ago, and the criteria has changed since. But I believe you have to have a thousand views already or a thousand subscribers and ten thousand views, something like that first.
So, of course, maybe the first few months you're not eligible, but it's really easy to become eligible pretty quickly."
JASON BUCKNER:
"Good one. And I guess most of the people listening today are here, you know, thinking about how do I make this YouTube thing... how do I become a YouTuber, so to speak, and get traffic into my website, traffic into my funnels, or traffic into my bricks-and-mortar business?
But there's more that you can get out of it as well.
I have to admit, I was listening to you there, and when you went through all the things that you should be doing inside YouTube, I thought, "I don't do that, I don't do that, I don't do that."
You know, I could put videos out that are questions that my database has been asking, and I've just used YouTube as the place to host the video, really. I haven't even thought or put a strategy into any of this. And I think that's going to change just after listening to what we've said so far."
CORINNA ESSA:
"And I'll tell you something else that you can do that makes a huge difference, and that's leveraging the power of YouTube cards and YouTube end screens.
So, a YouTube card is a clickable tab on your video that remains there throughout the video. I use YouTube cards to redirect traffic to my opt-in pages to capture leads. So, on the top right-hand side of each video, you'll see a little "i" symbol, and it's a clickable link that redirects to wherever you want people to go. So, it could be a website, it could be another video, it could be a landing page. I use it to capture people's name and email because I mainly use YouTube for building an email list.
So, a lot of people, again, don't use that prime real estate on YouTube videos. So, that's a shame.
And end screens! You see, someone on YouTube, they won’t watch just one video and then disappear. They’ll watch another one, and another one, and another one. You probably know this. You do this, don’t you?"
JASON BUCKNER:
"I do this."
CORINNA ESSA:
"So, at the end of each video, it allows you to have an ad which is an end screen, and it allows you to have a call to action for a few seconds. So, you can either redirect people to a report, a landing page, or to watch another video of yours, so they remain on your channel watching. You can have anything for ten seconds, like your own ad at the end of your video for about ten seconds. So, that’s something else people don’t do. They don’t leverage the power of end screens, which is a free ad, really."
Keeping Viewers Engaged: Why It Matters:
JASON BUCKNER:
"Yeah, that’s perfect, that’s perfect. I am one of those scrollers, you know. I literally just bought a new car maybe six months ago. And I bought the new car, and then it was six months until it was going to be delivered.
And so, I researched absolutely everything about that car. And by the time I’m finished, I go into YouTube now, and videos pop up about my car and the next version of my car and everything like that. They just keep popping up all the time, related videos.
And so, I am that person. I need to maximize on that from the other side, don’t I?"
CORINNA ESSA:
"Well, that’s right because, since a lot of people watch a few videos one after the other, you want them to remain on your channel. Because if you don’t offer something else to watch from your channel, it’s so easy for them to go somewhere else, and then you’ve lost them.
The longer they stay with you, listening to you and watching your videos, the more likely you are to convert them. So, it can be tricky to convert them with one video, but with several videos one after the other, you can really indoctrinate them."
JASON BUCKNER:
"Developing that relationship, isn’t it? It’s getting them to know you, like you, and trust you, and then they’ll take more action, won’t they?"
CORINNA ESSA:
"That’s right. And they’re staying on YouTube anyway, so they might as well stay on your YouTube channel because, you know, they are staying on YouTube. If they’re on YouTube, usually it’s a thirty-minute to forty-five-minute session, isn’t it? So, they might as well watch more videos."
